SEN Support in Schools and How Early Intervention and Tutoring Can Help Struggling Students
One of the most common frustrations I hear from parents is that schools often take too long to recognise when a child is falling behind in reading, writing, or spelling. By the time concerns are acknowledged, the child may have already experienced months or even years of struggling, leading to frustration, low self-esteem, and a negative relationship with learning.
At the same time, teachers are overworked, classrooms are overcrowded, and the demands on schools continue to grow. It’s not that schools don’t care—it’s that they simply don’t have the capacity to provide the level of individualised support that many children need.
Recently, a parent shared their deep frustration with me about how their child had been slipping through the cracks. Despite being two years behind in reading, the school had not noticed or taken action. They could see their child struggling, but the school was slow to respond. This conversation reaffirmed for me why the work we do at Acorn to Oak Education is so vital. Schools need support, and students need early intervention.
By partnering with schools, we can provide specialist SEN tutoring, coaching, and mentoring within school hours. This means:
Children receive targeted support sooner, preventing them from falling further behind.
Teachers are relieved of some of the pressure, allowing them to focus on the whole class while knowing their struggling students are getting the help they need.
Students are more likely to stay in school, rather than becoming so overwhelmed that they disengage or require alternative placements.
Mental health and self-esteem are protected, ensuring that learning challenges don’t become emotional burdens.
Our goal isn’t to criticize schools but to work alongside them—to be part of the solution. When we collaborate, students thrive, teachers feel supported, and schools function more effectively.
If you’re a parent or educator who feels like a child you know isn’t getting the support they need fast enough, let’s start a conversation.
