About the course
This course is designed to support learners in year 9, 10 and 11 through GCSE English courses as well as those retaking English GCSE with learning in a small group of no more than 6 learners.
The aim is to boost grades by developing the essential English language skills required for English GCSE. There is a special focus on gaining the skills and knowledge to reach at least the 4/5 grade level in GCSE English.
The course identifies the key skills that hold learners back from gaining a grade 4 or 5. These skills were selected following teacher feedback, exam script analysis and reviewing the outcomes from a range of students in Years 10 and 11.
The skills are:
(a) understanding the purpose of a text;
(b) understanding the audience a text is written for;
(c) explaining the effects of language and structure;
(d) understanding writers’ choices, such as point of view, and
(e) being able to retrieve information.
One of the key elements of the Accelerating Progress course is that it develops whole-text understanding which is an important requirement of the current English GCSE. Without this, learners would struggle to analyse the effects of language and compare writers’ ideas and perspectives in a way that helps them score well in the exam.
The course provides accreditation for learning for each 10 hours of accredited work with up to 10 credits available for 100 hours of accredited work. The rate at which learners progress through the accredited hours will vary and the course blocks all include teaching and revision of key topics needed for the work in that module to help learners achieve the best outcomes and develop their knowledge and skills. This course will run in other holidays and during term time sessions as well.
These credits can be used towards other ASDAN qualifications. Find out more here.
Learning is in a small group with a maximum of 6 learners with our highly experienced specialist teacher Amanda Porter. Amanda has an inclusive and engaging teaching style and a strong desire to see all learners achieve their best.
